Dogs are very obedient and we only need to make them understand what we want so they know what to do. This is best done by personally giving your dog basic and obedience training. The training is very easy and only takes a while as dogs are innately fast learners. Once trained, you can command your dog to stay as you open your garage door and it will learn to put your command first before its instincts because it sees you as its leader and since dogs are naturally obedient, it is easy for them to follow you.

I recommend that you watch my 4 minute dog training video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIY88BQIZ3s which will give you important tips on how to effectively train your dog and follow your ever order.

Remember that training is the best way to let your dog understand what is the things that pleases you and will earn him praise or a reward. Dogs want to constantly please their owners, all you need to do is to personally give them the proper training ( which is very easy )to make them understand what you allow and don’t allow in your household. – Hope my advice helps!

Totally agree with me..CA.

You absolutely CANNOT allow this dog to just wander off. You must leave him leashed and tied to somthing while you open the garage door.

You are being very irresponsible and I don't blame your neighbours or your mother for getting cross, in fact if I was your mother I think I would keep the dog well away from you.

LEASH HIM until he has learned. Or take the time and trouble to train him.

You need to start with some basic obedience, teaching him to sit on comand first.Only practice for 15-20 minutes a day. Then working with him when he knows sit really well teach him lay down. then you teach him stay do it in the house or in an inclosed space at first, put him in a sit and tell him stay with a flat palm in his face, fingers up. then if he doesnt get up give him a treat try this a few times, if he does this really well, then try waiting a few seconds, then take two steps back after telling him stay and then return to him and give him a treat its going to take time. then try it outside right from the begining again but with a leash on. with time he will learn you also just have to teach him that he has to answer to you, teaching recall works the same way, put him in a sit tell him stay walk to the end of the leash and tell him come, and give him a treat when he comes to you, work with him until everytime you call him to you he listens no matter what distractions are near him. goodluck. if you need help there might be a training facility that might be able to help you around your home.

BTW: Even though it is TRUE you need a leash, you CAN teach your dog boundaries! You don't HAVE to have a leash! And for the rest of you--you can say it nicely also. Duh!

Good luck with your dog!

Ever heard of a leash? Your dog is going to be roadkill if you don't start doing this...it is illegal to have a dog off leash and not in control!

You need to take him to some obedience classes where both of you will learn something!
