How are “Rescue Shelters” in the USA regulated?

Question by Jayse Ö Think before you breed: How are “Rescue Shelters” in the USA regulated?
If I advise someone to get a dog, or rehome a dog through a Rescue Shelter, I always emphasise REPUTABLE, and where appropriate suggest a dedicated Breed Club Rescue.
As we know, there are good and bad “rescue shelters” as there are good and bad breeders.
Anyone can call themselves a “Rescue” whether they operate reputably or not.
In the UK there are a few criteriors for licensing official Rescue Shelters. Some of these will become registered charities also, which means there is even more control over how they obtain money and use their funds.

Onviously anyone doing this on a large scale is (IMO) more likely to be more reputable and therefore having to operate on a more business-like approach and will need an income to maintain it correctly.

So, my Q, HOW ARE RESCUE SHELTERS REGULATED IN THE USA, if at all. ??

This was prompted by a Q today, as below, which I feel is not a “real” and “reputable” Rescue organsation.

wow! From the way the individual is talking, I honestly believe she’s still a child. If she isn’t then shes a very uneducated individual when it comes to a dogs anatomy. Especially when she said they found her during her heat cycle and she was unable to get spayed due to age. Any dog can be spayed and neutered as young as 3-4 months but typically they wait until their about 5-6.

As far as the regulations in the united states. If its a non profit organization then there isn’t any laws like a shelter would have besides the basic (spay, neuter, vaccinated and properly cared for) laws that everyone should or needs to follow. Unfortunately she doesn’t say where she’s located to look at the local laws that might be in effect. I know where I live in Nevada. They passed a law a few weeks ago that everyone needs to spay and neuter their pets UNLESS they are papered and the owners have a breeders license (which is difficult to get in this state).
